MOLLY MALONES & 97 THE TERRACE
SEISMIC STRENGTHENING

Following the Kaikoura earthquake on November 2016 the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE) required building owners to take action to secure unreinforced masonry parapets and facades by March 2018.

RivCon were engaged to complete both of these contracts in a short timeframe to ensure MBIE deadlines were met and fines avoided.

With both building located on prominent corners, access requirements to complete the works externally were going to prove difficult and costly. RivCon worked closely with Silvester Clark to ensure the buildability and installation of the URM requirements were successfully achieved entirely within the building envelope. This avoided disruptions to the public and made savings for our client through reduced project time whilst avoiding the additional cost of scaffolding, pedestrian management, inclement weather delays, etc.

The scope included the installation of steel angle supports to tie the double skin brick façade and parapets back to the internal structure along with timber bracing diaphragms to the flooring structure to provide rigidity along these faces. With the heritage significance of the buildings and requirement to keep the external façade in its original appearance the strengthening design was done so that all works could be completed from the interior of the building, with minimal visual impact to the exterior of either building.
